While Cromane supporters, players and management team bask in the glory of a County Novice Championship title, they can thank the leadership qualities of the their inspirational captain Donnchadh Walsh for this win, though Sean O’Sullivan was the player who killed off Ballydonoghue with those late missiles from long range.
Walsh is aware of what this win means to Cromane a club only founded in 1983.
“The conditions made it extremely tough today and that made it difficult for us to play the football that we wanted to play, which was long into the forwards but we were not able to do that from the start because we were against the wind.
“You have to have two game plans, one against the wind and one for when you play with it. But I thought that this win came down to work rate, because when I won the toss we opted to play against the wind.
“We knew that if we worked hard during the first half, and we were going in only one point down at half time, we knew we were in with a great shout. We took it on in the second half and despite there being a lot of work, because Ballydonoghue came at us, so we had to grind out the result and we did.”
What pressure does finals like these bring upon club players?
“There is pressure not only from your own team where you have to be seen as being a leader because being from a small club, they aspire to myself and Sean and they want to be like us and do whatever we do. When Sean goes on a surging run, it really lifts the team just like when he got that great point today that leveled the game. The other players take heart when they see the top players playing well so it does bring on pressure but it’s nice pressure.
“It means so much to win with the lads you grew up with and went to school with. The club was formed the year before I was born so this is a young club and I am as old as this club which is unusual and its makes it so sweet. We had awful problems trying to get a field and to get the club running because not everyone was happy with our birth so it’s a payback to our parents and club management down the years who put in so much work to enable us to play in a county final and to win it is just so pleasing.”
Meanwhile, Ballydonoghue manager Tadhg Carr had few complaints but felt that his young side did not do enough in the opening half.
“We did not have enough on the board at half time because we found it hard to adopt to the conditions, when we played with the wind in that opening half. We did not take our scores in the opening half, and we missed a few frees that were very scorable and that proved the difference between victory and defeat.
“Seán O’Sullivan stepped up to the plate in the second half and kicked those vital late frees for Cromane when we had edged in front late on. This was the difference at the end when you have a county player that will stand up to the plate.
“Fair play to the county lads like Seán and Donnchadh Walsh, whom I thought was head and shoulders above everyone else. They are still doing it at the end of the year in those conditions for their clubs, despite having All-Ireland medals in their pockets. It just tells you what players they are and what Kerry football is about at the minute and what the club means to them. I think that game today shows how healthy club football is and maybe we should not believe all we read.
“I never doubted our lads and we were without Paul Kennelly today, who has scored 6 -78 for us all season, and with Eamon Walsh only coming on as a sub, we were always going to a bit shy up front but with so many youngsters in the squad, we are building for the future and we wish Cromane well but we will be back.”

Novice County Final
Cromane 0-11 V Ballydonoghue 2-03
ON a day most foul weather wise, Cromane had to withstand a second half Ballydonoghue fight back to capture their first Castleisland Co-Op Mart County Novice Football Championship, thanks to three magnificent late points from county star Seán O’Sullivan at Austin Stack Park, Tralee, on Sunday.
This was a game that did not catch fire until the second half, and Cromane deservedly took the cup back over the Laune Bridge, because they displayed the better work ethic and their two marquee players, Donnchadh Walsh and Seán O’Sullivan delivered the goods, when the chips were down.
Ballydonoghue will look back on this final and wonder why they played so poorly in the opening half with the strong wind behind them and retiring with just a one point advantage at the interval 1-1 to 0-3 was never going to be enough.
The North Kerry side missed their suspended top gun Paul Kennelly as their attack was toothless during the opening quarter, until they introduced young Eamon Walsh (carrying an injury) by which stage Ballydonoghue had accumulated four wides.
Meanwhile, Cromane, who had opted to play against the wind, were in full flow as Donnchadh Walsh looked a different class at midfield as he ranged up and down the pitch fetching, attacking and defending.
In the 10th minute Seán O’Sullivan gave Cromane the lead and then Seán Walsh added a second point into the teeth of the wind.Then enter Eamon Walsh in the 15th minute for Ballydonoghue and within a minute he made a searing run, setting up Barry Shanahan for a goal, before the sub added a point, and suddenly it was 1-1 to 0-2. Donnchadh Walsh closed the gap with a point as Ballydonoghue continued to fire blanks up front and the Mid Kerry club led 1-1 to 0-3 at the break.
Cromane then added three unanswered points in the opening ten minutes after the break, through Seán O’Sullivan (free) and Michael Teahan and Paul O’Sullivan.
However, Cromane then lost their shape and started to funnel numbers back behind the ball, which was asking for trouble, and, suddenly, Ballydonoghue sniffed a chance and attacked in numbers. However they ran into some solid defending by James and Noel Foley along with Michael Teahan and Peter O’Reilly as Ballydonoghue were guilty of over carrying when along ball to Walsh on the edge of the square might have been better.
Donnchadh Walsh and the lively Micheál O’Shaughnessy kicked points for Cromane while Pádraig Bunyan and Eoin O’Sullivan answered for Ballydonoghue before they rocked Cromane when a long run by Martin O’Mahony through the middle went unchallenged and when he found Eamon Walsh, he shot to the net and suddenly Cromane found them a point behind with five left.
It was then that Donnchadh Walsh showed his leadership as he drove forward and Seán O’Sullivan equalised with a superb long-range effort.
Then it was O’Sullivan with a free from the left and then another from under the stand on the right hand side that sealed a deserved and historic Cromane win.

Novice County Championship Semi Final
Cromane 0-10 Churchill 0-09
Cromane qualified for the Novice County football final a hard fought win over Churchill in Milltown on Saturday last. They now go on to face Ballydonghue in the final, which is fixed for December 2.
Cromane will be delighted to have come through what was a very though encounter. Churchill may have lacked the impact players that Cromane have in Sean O’ Sullivan and Donnchadh Walsh, but they were probably the better all round team over the 60 minutes.
Cromane made a very good start playing into a slight breeze and went 2 points up after four minutes when Sean O'Sullivan tapped over a twenty metre free and Donnchadh Walsh thundered forward to kick a great point from play.
Churchill got a real foothold in the game and dominated the remainder of the first half. Johnny McCarthy and Conor Daly both scored good points and levelled the game after ten minutes. Churchill were doing well in most areas of the pitch, Gary Rolls was outstanding at corner back, Daniel Doyle was on top in his tussle with fellow county panellist Sean O’Sullivan while captain Garret Walsh was superb at centre back.
Churchill looked good until they got into the final third of the pitch, but they really struggled to convert their dominance into scores. Conor Daly and Johnny McCarthy and Daly again all added to Churchill's first half total with points from play but O’Sullivan finished the half with a simple tap over free and the men from Tralee bay went in at half time a mere two points to the good at 0-05 to 0-03.
The opening five minutes of the second half saw a flurry of scores. O'Sullivan added a free straight after the throw-in for Cromane, but Churchill quickly responded with another couple of points from play from their twin strike threat of Daly and McCarthy.
Cromane were, finally, finding their feet in the game, however, and they applied a quick bout of pressure that yielded three more points from Donnchadh Walsh, JP McCarthy and a superb effort from Sean O'Sullivan from a sideline ball.
The sides were level at 0-7 apiece and then 0-8 apiece as Johnny McCarthy and Sean O'Sullivan swapped further points. Donnchadh Walsh, Michael Teahan and Peter Reilly were all doing well for Cromane at this stage, but it was their inter-county star Sean O'Sullivan who was to prove to be their real inspiration.
Churchill substitute Pa McCarthy cancelled out another Sean O'Sullivan free to leave the sides locked together again with three minutes remaining. Cromane won a free about 60 metres out from the Churchill goal and it was a real case of 'commeth the hour commeth the man' as Sean O'Sullivan somehow managed to score from what looked to be an impossible distance out.
Churchill rallied once more and had a final chance of bringing the game into extra-time, but Johnny McCarthy saw his effort from a free drift agonisingly wide and with it Churchill's chances of victory.
Cromane will now go in with confidence to play a Ballydonghue side that sit right beside them in the lower half of Division 4 of the County league. For now though the Mid Kerry side will just celebrate their qualification for a county final.

Novice County Championship Quarter Final

Cromane set up a semi-final meeting with Churchill following this workmanlike win over Listry in Cromane on Sunday.
A strong wind blowing in off Castlemaine Harbour meant that free-flowing football was hard to find but the sides did manage to produce a competitive game. Cromane faced that wind in the first half and led by 1-4 to 0-5 at half time. Their goal game came after some quick-thinking from Seán O’Sullivan. He netted a rebound after his quickly taken 14-yard free was initially parried by Listry’s stand-in goalkeeper James Mannix.
Listry, with Stephen Brosnan having a mighty battle with Donnchadh Walsh, were ultimately too wasteful in that first half and failed to score during the second 30 minutes. Cromane, with Peter O’Reilly and James Foley dominant in the backs, took time to settle in the second period . They gradually got on top and as Listry tired and reeled off four points in a ten-minute spell in the second half. The pick came from the industrious Seán Walsh who slotted home, wind-assisted, from 50 yards out.

Duagh 0-12 Cromane 0-05
This game was played in Duagh on a Thursday evening with the home side proving too strong for the Cromane side. Duagh took the game to their opponents from the start with Tim Scanlon opeing the scoring with a point from play. Three unanswered points followed with Tim Dillon providing two from free's with the other coming from the boot of O'Donoghue.
Cromane first score came from the accurate shoot of Gary McGrath from a free and then Sean Walsh kicked a fine point from play to reduce the margin further. Tom Dillon completed the scoring with another pointed free just before the interval at which Duagh led 0-6 to 0-3.
Cromane needed a good start to the second period but it was the home side who opened the better and Tim Scanlon fired over from play. John O''Brien the regular full back was placed at midfield and had a fine point to stretch the lead. Gary McGrath Cromane's best player kicked a fine point to reduce the deficit but this was quickly cancelled by an Anthony Maher effort from play and he followed this with a pointed 40 meter freeto kill off the game as a contest. Cromane got one back via McGrath but Tom Dillon had the final say in the game and pointed 2 late frees forprecious County League points.

Valentia were visitors to Cromane on Sunday last and both teams played out an exciting draw. The cross field wind spoiled the game at times. Valentia were first to score with a pointed free from John Shannahan and a point from play by Muiris O’Sullivan. Gary McGrath had the sides level within minutes when he converted a free and dropped a point over from play for Cromane. Valentia went into a 2 point lead with 2 long range points into the wind but Gary McGrath again had the sides level by the 20th minute when he kicked another point from play aswell as a converted free. Valentia took the lead with a point from play from Alan Curran but the sides were once again level after a pointed free from Gary McGrath after he was fouled himself. Then came the only goal of the game from the boot of Gary McGrath after a great Cromane move. Valentia had the last score of the half with a point from play by Muiris O’Sullivan which left the half time score Cromane 1-4 Valentia 0-6.
In the 2nd half Cromane extended their lead to 3 points with 2 points a converted 21 m free and a point from play both from Gary McGrath. Valentia had a great chance of a goal but the shot went straight across the goal mouth but went narrowly wide. Valentia then had 2 points from John Shannahan one from a free and one from play to leave 1 point between the sides. Valentia then drew level with a point from a free from John Shannhan, Cromane had 2 great goal chances but were stopped in their tracks by the Valentia goal keeper and went wide. Valentia took a one point lead with a point from play from John Shannahan but in the dying minutes Cromane were awarded a 21m free which was topped over by Gary McGrath to leave the sides level at full time. Gary McGrath was the only scorer for Cromane on the day.

In the 2nd half Cromane extended their lead to 3 points with 2 points a converted 21 m free and a point from play both from Gary McGrath. Valentia had a great chance of a goal but the shot went straight across the goal mouth but went narrowly wide. Cromane were at home on Sunday last in the Novice County Championship and after a good sporting contest Cromane emerged victorious. In the first half it was Templenoe who started the brighter with 2 points from play from corner forward Shane Cremins but Cromane drew level after 12 minutes with a pointed free from Gary McGrath aswell as a point from play from Donnachadh Walsh. But it was Templenoe that dominated the next 10 minutes with points from Timmy Clifford, Shane Cremins and from full forward Ogie Sheehan all from play. Cromane ended the half stronger with 2 points from Sean O’Sullivan one from a free and one from play. Cromane were victorious over Glenbeigh / Glencar on Sunday last in Cromane. Cromane had the advantage of the wind in the first half but it was Glenbeigh / Glencar who had the first score a point from Stephen Caulfield. Cromane squandered a lot of early chances a Cromane’s first score came from a sideline ball on the dressing room side from Sean O’Sullivan. Cromane then went into a 3 point lead with 3 points from Gary McGrath; 2 free’s and 1 from play. Then came the only goal of the game which was scored by Sean O’Sullivan after a great passing movement and great work by Sean Walsh. Gary McGrath extended Cromane’s lead with a point from play but Glenbeigh / Glencar pulled a point back when Stephen Caulfield converted a free. Cromane Seniors were away to Firies on Sunday last in Round 3 of the County League. The game was played in good conditions with a strong wind. Cromane had the use of the wind in the first half and were leading at half time on a score of 1-5 to 1-1. The first score of the game was a goal by Gary McGrath for Cromane. Cromane added point from play for James Foley but Firies scored a goal against the run of play. Cromane then had a number of great chances including a goal which was to cost them dearly in the finish, Cromane had two points from Sean O’Sullivan one from play and one from a free. Cromane extended their lead in the closing stages of the first half and added two further points one from Donnacadh Walsh and one from John O’Sullivan. Firies pulled a point back just before the break to leave the half time score Cromane 1-5 Firies 1-1.
In the 2nd half Firies playing with the aid of the wind scored 2 quick frees and cut the Cromane lead to two points. Firies had another point from play which was answered by a point from John O’Sullivan for Cromane but Firies drew level after they scored a further two points one from a free and one from play. Then Firies took the lead with a point from play but the sides were again level after Cromane had a point from James Foley. Firies took the lead again with a converted free and with time running out Cromane drew level with a piont from Gary McGrath. Cromane run the resulting kick out and Sean O’Sullivan raced through the Firies defence but his shot went agonisingly wide. Everyone thought that the game would end in a draw but the referee awarded a free to Firies in injury time to give them victory by a point. The final score was Cromane 1-8 Firies 1-9.

Cromane Seniors were at home to Ballyduff in round 2 of the County League on Saturday evening last. Cromane were comprehensively beaten by the North Kerry Champions who gave a fantastic exhibition of football throughout the hour. Cromane’s cause was not helped by the fact they had to field without a number of key players. Ballyduff had 2 quick point s from play one each from their corner forwards followed by the only goal of the game which defeated Connie Riordan. Cromane then had a point from play from Colin O’Sullivan but was immediately cancelled out by a point from play by Ballyduff’s corner back. Cromane fought back with 2 pointed free’s from Gary McGrath and a point from play from Francis Casey followed by another point from play by Gary McGrath to leave 2 points between the sides. But in the closing stages of the first half Ballyduff kicked 5 points and Cromane’s only reply was a pointed free by Sean O’Sullivan leaving the half time score Ballyduff 1-8 Cromane 0-6.
In the 2nd half Ballyduff completely dominated and kicked 7 unanswered points. Cromane tried but couldn’t cope with the skill and speed of the Ballyduff side. The final score was Ballyduff 1-15 Cromane 0-6.

Cromane Seniors travelled to Scartaglen on Sunday last in the opening round of this years Co. League. The game was played in atrocious conditions with heavy hailstone showers from the north and a strong wind. Scartaglen had the aid of the wind in the first half but it was Cromane who were first to score and proved the winner with a point by Donnachadh Walsh. Scartaglen dominated the half kicking 5 points including 3 frees. Cromane put a great move together and was finished to the net for a goal by John O’Sullivan. Scartaglen finished the scoring of the half with 2 points one from a free and one from play to leave the half time score 0-7 to 1-1.
In the second half Cromane with the aid of the wind had 2 quick points from play both from Donnachadh Walsh. Mid-way through the half they added to their score with another 2 converted free’s 1 from Gary McGrath and 1 from Donnachadh Walsh. Then came the greatest score of the game which was a point from play from Donnacadh Walsh, followed by a great long range free from Sean O’Sullivan which went over the bar to leave them ahead by 3 points. Gary McGrath put Cromane 4 points ahead with a converted free after Cian O’Keefe was fouled. Scartaglen scored a goal in the closing stages of normal time to leave the minimum between the sides. Scartaglen went all out to find the equaliser but Cromane stood firm and the final score was Cromane 1-8 Scartaglen 1-7.

Mid Kerry League
Cromane 1-4 Beaufort 0-7
Beaufort were visitors to Cromane on Sunday last to play the locals in a back game in Round 2 of the league. Beaufort had the aid of the strong wind in the first half and had a point from a free by Micheal Hallissy. Cromane’s backs were playing well but Beaufort had their 2nd point from play from centre back Michael J O’Connor. Cromane then had a free after Paul P.O’Sullivan was fouled on the 21 metre line which was scored by Maurice O’Shea which was to be there only point of the half. Beaufort added a further 3 points during the half, 3 from play, 1 by Micheal Hallissy and Edwin Kelliher they also had a pointed free from Micheal Hallissy this left the half time score Beaufort 0 - 5 Cromane 0-1.
In the 2nd half Cromane seemed to step up a gear but where cheated the first score when Beaufort’s full forward James O’Reilly scored a point from play to extend their lead to 5 points. Donnachadh Walsh of Cromane was playing an outstanding game at midfield and had to put up with some very harsh treatment as well as some bad referring decisions but went on to score a point from play. Maurice O’Shea then converted a point to bring Cromane back in to the game. But Beaufort pulled a point back against the run of play by James Reilly. Cromane dominated the last 12 minutes of the half with some narrow wides before a great point from play from Sean Walsh. From the resulting kick out Cromane were awarded a 50 metre free which was taken by Donnachadh Walsh and went all the way to the back of Beaufort’s net assisted by a flick on by Sean Walsh. The sides were now level Cromane 1-4 Beaufort 0-7. Both sides had chances of winning the game but were narrowly wide. The final score was Cromane 1-4 Beaufort 0-7.

Beaufort were visitors to Cromane on Sunday last to play the locals in a back game in Round 2 of the league. Beaufort had the aid of the strong wind in the first half and had a point from a free by Micheal Hallissy. Cromane’s backs were playing well but Beaufort had their 2nd point from play from centre back Michael J O’Connor. Cromane then had a free after Paul P.O’Sullivan was fouled on the 21 metre line which was scored by Maurice O’Shea which was to be there only point of the half. Beaufort added a further 3 points during the half, 3 from play, 1 by Micheal Hallissy and Edwin Kelliher they also had a pointed free from Micheal Hallissy this left the half time score Beaufort 0 - 5 Cromane 0-1.
In the 2nd half Cromane seemed to step up a gear but where cheated the first score when Beaufort’s full forward James O’Reilly scored a point from play to extend their lead to 5 points. Donnachadh Walsh of Cromane was playing an outstanding game at midfield and had to put up with some very harsh treatment as well as some bad referring decisions but went on to score a point from play. Maurice O’Shea then converted a point to bring Cromane back in to the game. But Beaufort pulled a point back against the run of play by James Reilly. Cromane dominated the last 12 minutes of the half with some narrow wides before a great point from play from Sean Walsh. From the resulting kick out Cromane were awarded a 50 metre free which was taken by Donnachadh Walsh and went all the way to the back of Beaufort’s net assisted by a flick on by Sean Walsh. The sides were now level Cromane 1-4 Beaufort 0-7. Both sides had chances of winning the game but were narrowly wide. The final score was Cromane 1-4 Beaufort 0-7.

Glenbeigh/Glencar 2-9 Cromane 1-9
This game was played in Rossbeigh and Cromane had the first use of the wind. The first score of the came from a sideline kick by Maurice O’Shea. Glenbeigh / Glencar replied with a point from Podge Griffin. Paul P.O’Sullivan took the lead for Cromane with a point from play. Glenbeigh / Glencar were then awarded by a close end free which was scored by Stephen Caulfield which was answered by a Cromane free which was scored by Maurice O’Shea. James O’Sullivan playing at midfield for Glenbeigh / Glencar had the sides level with a fisted point. Cromane then scored their goal which was scored by corner forward Martin Sweeney but Glenbeigh / Glencar answered immediately after a long ball into the Cromane square was dropped by the defence and Stephen Caulfield pulled on the lose ball to secure a goal for Glenbeigh / Glencar. Just before the break Glenbeigh / Glencar were awarded a penalty which was scored by Aidan O’Shea leaving the half time score Glenbeigh / Glencar 2-3 Cromane 1-4.
In the 2nd half Glenbeigh / Glencar extended their lead with a point from Aidan O’Shea. Cromane were playing better against the wind and were awarded a 20m free which was pointed by Maurice O’Shea. Cromane then scored a goal by Francis Casey but was unfortunately disallowed by the referee who adjudged it to be square ball. Glenbeigh / Glencar answered with a great long range point from Fergal Griffin. Cromane after a great move added a point to their tally by Colm Joy. Glenbeigh / Glencar had a point from play by Connie Murphy and further extended their lead with points from Fergal Griffin and Bernard Murphy. Cromane pulled 2 points back from free’s by Maurice O’Shea. Both teams exchanged pointed free’s Stephen Caulfield for Glenbeigh / Glencar and Maurice O’Shea for Cromane. Cromane were now 3 points behind and went all out in search of a goal in the last attacks of the game but the Glenbeigh / Glencar stood firm and cleared the goal line in injury time. Milltown / Castlemaine were visitors to Cromane on Sunday last for the start of the Mid Kerry League.Cromane had the aid of the strong wind in the first half. The spectators had to wait for the 12th minute for the first score which was a point from play by Derek Twiss for Milltown / Castlemaine. Milltown / Castlemaine then had a great chance of a goal but was brilliantly saved by the Cromane keeper Connie O’Riordan. Milltown / Castlemaine extended their lead with a pointed free from Derek Twiss. The sides were level after Cromane had 2 points from Gary McGrath one from play and one from a free. Midfielder Mike Burke scored a point from play for Milltown / Castlemaine after a quick free. But the sides were level at the break when Cromane Paul P.O’Sullivan from play. The half time score was Cromane 0-3 Milltown / Castlemaine 0-3.
In the 2nd half Milltown / Castlemaine with the aid of the wind had 2 points from Ian Twiss one from play and one from a free. Cromane had a number of chances to draw level but were narrowly wide.
